4. Comment on the quotation from Johnson's Preface to his dictionary: I have notwithstanding this discouragement, attempted a dictionary of the english language, which, while it was employed in the cultivation of every species of literature, has itself been hitherto neglected, suffered to spread, under the direction of chance, into wild exuberance, resigned to the tyranny of time and fashion, and exposed to the corruptions of ignorance, and caprices of innovation.

Uglavnom, ja sam bila 31.1. i pitanja su bila iz onog "kompletića" u kojem su ponuđena pitanja o:
a)word- formation processes a drive-in bank, unladylike, mob...;
b) rhymes complain-in vain, emptiless-less (uz jednu strofu u kojoj su te riječi, naravno)- prodiskutirati rime;
c)what event can be said to mark the beginning of the English language;
d) comment on the grammar of the following passage- Bardolph, am I not fallen away... I am whithered like an old-apple-John
e) consonant and vocalic verbs- prepoznati u tekstu i objasniti koji su koji i zašto
f) objasniti semantičke promjene od razdoblja Johnsonovog rječnika (ponuđeno je nekoliko riječi)
g) označiti riječi kao English or Romance, semantic field i word class: I nam but a lewd compilateur...

07.02.
1. comment on the common features of the indo-european languages, what do these features tell us about them?
2. a short text in OE. U need 2 find all the nouns and say something about their cases.... didn't even attempt to answer
3. a text in ME - u need to comment on the grammatical and lexical innovations in comparison with the OE period
4. an extract from shakespeare - a poem from A midsummer night's dream, explain what disturbed the original rhyme of these lines?
(uglavnom, to je nekoliko redaka cije su se zadnje rijeci rimovale prije serije izgovornih promjena koje se svrstavaju pod krov ''the Great Vowel Shift''. treba reci da su se te rijeci prije tih promjena rimovale, npr gone [go:n] i none [no:n] etc., no rimu su ''pokvarile'' te pronunciation changes, because during the gr8 vowel shift all long vowels became higher (more tense). a stvar je dodatno zakomplicirala cinjenica da nisu ipak sve rijeci koje imaju long vowel sudjelovale....no, uglavnom, to je razlog zasto se dana sne rimuju. the gr8 vowel shift dobro je objasnjen u 3. dijelu skripte)
5. discuss intralinguistic and extra-linguistic factors that inflence semantic changes.
6. what grammatical rules set by the 18th ct. grammarians rely on the notions of order and logic?

1. treba reći što se iz vokabulara tih jezika može zaključiti o području na kojemu su govornici živjeli, njihovom nač.života, isl. te dati primjere iz razl. jezika, uključ. hrvatski
2. na pronađenim imenicama treba označiti inflectional endings i imenice transkribovati
7. pitanje o semant. promjenama u nekoliko ponuđenih riječi

12.2.2007.
Bilo je prepoznavanje imenica, njihovih padeža i pad.-nastavaka iz teksta iz Biblije;
prepoznavanje glasovnih promjena u rimi u Shakespearovoj pjesmi,
i pronalaženje leksičkih i gramatičkih promjena u Chaucerovom tekstu.
Što možemo zaključiti o Indoeuropljanima i njihovoj pradomovini i načinu života.
Kako su se promijenile riječi approve i weeds.
Kako su 18.-stoljetni gramatičari pokušavali ustanoviti logiku u jeziku.
Koji (ne-)lingvistički faktori utječu na to da se jezici mijenjaju, tako nešto.
Mislim da je to otprilike to.

28.4.2007.
1. what event marks the beginning of the english language?
2. text in Old English (mislim Mathew iz Biblije) - find all consonantal and vocalic verbs, explain how they changed till today
3. stihovi u kojima se rimuje break - weak, i sve tako nešto, treba objasniti changes in pronunciation
4. stihovi iz shakespearea, hamlet mislim, explain grammar
5. semantic changes na primjerima
6. word formational processes na primjerima (a drive-in bank, to televize, unladylike, mob)
7. mark words as English or Romance, text je Middle English mislim

Shea (napisa):
Nova pitanja:

16.2.2009.

4. Identify the text below, find all the french words in it and discuss the underlined forms.
Ther was also a Nonne, a Prioresse,
That of hir smylyng was ful symple and coy;
Hir gretteste ooth was but by Seinte Loy;
And she was cleped Madame Eglentyne.

Ful weel she soong the service dyvyne,
Entuned in hir nose ful semely,
And Frenssh she spak ful faire and fetisly,
After the scole of Stratford-atte-Bowe,
For Frenssh of Parys was to hir unknowe.
At mete wel ytaught was she with alle:
She leet no morsel from hir lippes falle,
Ne wette hir fyngres in hir sauce depe;
Wel koude she carie a morsel, and wel kepe
That no drope ne fille upon hir brist.
In curteisie was set ful muche hir list.

underlined: ooth, soong, spak, ytaught, koude

8. Discuss the foreign suffixes in English and give examples.
9. What is a calque? Discuss and give examples.
10. Discuss the ongoing change in ModE.

answer 7/10

20. i 26.2. 2009.

good luck

Bilo je 10 pitanja, biraš 7 pitanja. Tri su bila teksta (po jedan OE, ME i ModE) u kojima moraš objasniti podcrtane riječi (npr. OE glagoli ili ModE glagoli i zamjenice). Jedno je pitanje bilo da objasniš da li je opravdana tvrdnja da je engleski jezik dijalekt francuskog. Uglavnom, skripta sa neta i pitanja koja su na forumu ti jako dobro dođu!

1. What is grammaricalisation? Explain.
2. How did Germanic languages influence English throughout history (their historical connections)
3. What is the origin of the following (pa sad desetak imena mjesta tipa Oxford, London, Winchester, Avon...)
4. What grammar rules from ME perion these sentences do not comply to? (pa 5 rečenica, al to mi je bilo mutno)
5. Which OE suffixes remained in English today: Explain and examples...
Explain the origin and semantic changes in the following words (pa riječi iz OE, French, Latin tipa reckon - compute - calculate...)
6. How did the Great Vowel Shift extend the gap between pronunciation and spelling?
- još jedno kaj se ne mogu sjetit i 3 teksta, OE, ME, i ModE

to su ti pitanja od danas (26.2.)

1. 2. 3. bila su tri primjera OE, ME i ModE teksta s podvucenim rijecima za analizirati.
onda: someone once said that english was a dialect of french. is there any truth to this?
onda: OE vocab in ModE
onda: front mutation, is it present today?
onda: lista rijeci s etimologijom i onda trebas napisati semanticku tipizaciju

usporediti analiticke i sinteticke jezike i dati primjere iz engleskog i drugih jezika.

12.5.2009.

Answer 7/10

1. Which years are usually taken to delimit the period in the history of the English language? Discuss.

2. Discuss the vocabulary that Modern English inherited from Old English.

3. Where does the following text come from? Analyze the underlined words.

þa hæðenan swa dydon ... anum, þurh... þam hæþenum ... we hit ...

4. In what respect was the Old English verb system “simpler“ than the Modern English system?

In alle the orders foure is noon that kan
… maad ful many…
Ful sweetly … wiste …

6. Discuss how orthography changed in the transition from Old English to Middle English.

7.Where do the following lines come from? Comment on the underlined words (“correctness” of form, innovation, syntax).
Describe the pronunciation and the changes that disturbed the rhyme.

Now whil’st your purpled hand do reeke and smoake,
Fulfill your pleasure. (…)
Brutus. O Antony! Begge not your death of vs.
Though now we must appeare bloody and cruell,
As by our hands, and this our present Acte
You see we do: Yet see you but our hands,
And this, the bleeding businesse they haue done. (…)
Antony. O, lodgment, thou art fled to brutish Beasts,
And Men haue lost their Reason,
Beare with me.

8. Give examples of derivational suffixes that English borrowed from other languages and explain them.

9. Discuss some of the changes in the history of the English language that show the development from a synthetic language to an analytic one.

10. Explain the semantic changes that developed in the following words since the publication of Johnson’s Dictionary.
Say something about the dictionary too.

BLACKGUARD A cant word amongst the vulgar by which is iplied a dirty fellow, of the meanest kind.
TO CRUISE To rove over the sea in search of opportunities to plunder, to wander on the sea without any certain course.

STARIJA I MODERNA BRITANSKA

za skripte pošaljete pp sunflowerici

što se tiče moderne:

sunflower (napisa):

snoopy (napisa):
Pošto je naš dragi forum misteriozno nestao, I hope this helps:

http://rapidshare.com/files/279637653/Moderna_britanska_-_pitanja_s_foruma.doc

Kad sam ja pripremao ispit, skinuo sam sva pitanja sa "starog" foruma i stavio ih u word, just in case. So there! Very Happy

Prenosim ih vama, uzivajte i citajte knjige, meni je ispit bio jako ugodan, bio sam kod Knezevica i iako sam imao samo 15 items na popisu (a tih 15 knjiga sam stvarno i procitao) nije mi nista prigovorio. Pitanja se uvijek ponavljaju, ima ih i u ovom sto sam uploadao, a njemu je i vazno vase osobno misljenje, mozete i reci "knjiga mi je glupa, super..." samo je vazno da kazete i zasto... Cool

snoopy (napisa):
A evo vam i A Glossary of Literary terms od Abramsa, iznimno koristan i za stariju i za modernu britansku knjizevnost.
